Timbre-Aware LLM-based Direct Speech-to-Speech Translation Extendable to Multiple Language Pairs

Direct Speech-to-Speech Translation (S2ST) has gained increasing attention for its ability to translate speech from one language to another, while reducing error propagation and latency inherent in traditional cascaded pipelines. However, existing direct S2ST systems continue to face notable challenges, including instability in semantic-acoustic alignment when parallel speech data is scarce, difficulty in preserving speaker identity, and limited multilingual scalability. In this work, we introduce DS2ST-LM, a scalable, single-stage direct S2ST framework leveraging a multilingual Large Language Model (LLM). The architecture integrates a Whisper speech encoder, a learnable projection module, a Qwen2-0.5B LLM, and a timbre-controlled vocoder. We construct GigaS2S-1000, a 1000-hour bilingual corpus by extending the GigaST dataset with high-fidelity synthetic target speech, and show that this synthetic data alleviates data scarcity to some extent. We investigate two semantic token generation strategies: speech-derived S3 tokens and text-derived tokens generated by a pre-trained LLM, and analyze their impact on training stability and semantic consistency. We further evaluate three projection architectures (Linear, Conv1D-Linear, and Q-Former) and observe that while higher-capacity projectors converge faster, the simple Linear projector achieves higher performance. Extensive experiments demonstrate that DS2ST-LM outperforms traditional cascaded and ST (Qwen-Audio) + TTS baselines across both lexical (BLEU, METEOR) and semantic (BLEURT, COMET) metrics, while extending to multiple language pairs, including French, Spanish, German, Hindi, Bengali, and Urdu. Furthermore, we incorporate timbre-aware speech synthesis to preserve speaker information, enabling DS2ST-LM to surpass prior direct S2ST systems in both speaker similarity and perceptual naturalness.

Speech Meets ELF: Audio Conditional Continuous-Target Diffusion for Speech Recognition and Translation

Speech-to-text (S2T) systems for recognition (ASR) and translation (S2TT) typically generate discrete text tokens. In contrast, continuous-target language modelling performs generation in a continuous space, yet its potential for S2T remains unexplored. To bridge this gap, we propose ELF-S2T, an audio-conditioned continuous-target generative model for S2T. Built upon the pre-trained Embedded Language Flows (ELF) backbone, ELF-S2T processes speech via a frozen Whisper encoder and a single linear projector, prepending the resulting audio condition to the noisy text latent for in-context, flow-matching denoising. To prevent the model from over-relying on its pre-trained text context, we introduce audio forcing during training, and further amplify the audio condition via classifier-free guidance at inference. Experiments on LibriSpeech and CoVoST2 show that ELF-S2T achieves competitive ASR and S2TT performance. Crucially, our error analysis reveals that, although ASR and S2TT errors look very different on the surface, both stem from the same underlying cause, a close distance confusion in the continuous latent space. This finding naturally aligns with the continuous representation generation paradigm, indicating a common semantic mapping process beneath recognition and translation. Is a 3D-Tokenized LLM the Key to Reliable Autonomous Driving?

Rapid advancements in Autonomous Driving (AD) tasks turned a significant shift toward end-to-end fashion, particularly in the utilization of vision-language models (VLMs) that integrate robust logical reasoning and cognitive abilities to enable comprehensive end-to-end planning. However, these VLM-based approaches tend to integrate 2D vision tokenizers and a large language model (LLM) for ego-car planning, which lack 3D geometric priors as a cornerstone of reliable planning. Naturally, this observation raises a critical concern: Can a 2D-tokenized LLM accurately perceive the 3D environment? Our evaluation of current VLM-based methods across 3D object detection, vectorized map construction, and environmental caption suggests that the answer is, unfortunately, NO. In other words, 2D-tokenized LLM fails to provide reliable autonomous driving. In response, we introduce DETR-style 3D perceptrons as 3D tokenizers, which connect LLM with a one-layer linear projector. This simple yet elegant strategy, termed Atlas, harnesses the inherent priors of the 3D physical world, enabling it to simultaneously process high-resolution multi-view images and employ spatiotemporal modeling. Despite its simplicity, Atlas demonstrates superior performance in both 3D detection and ego planning tasks on nuScenes dataset, proving that 3D-tokenized LLM is the key to reliable autonomous driving. Parallax: Parameterized Local Linear Attention for Language Modeling

Large Language Models (LLMs) have become the central paradigm in artificial intelligence, yet the core computational primitive of attention has remained structurally unchanged. Local Linear Attention (LLA) is an attention mechanism derived from nonparametric statistics in the test-time regression framework. In contrast to prior research on efficient attention variants, LLA upgrades the local constant estimate in softmax attention to a local linear estimate, yielding provably superior bias-variance tradeoffs for associative memory. However, LLA has not been scaled in LLM pretraining due to computational and numerical stability concerns. We introduce Parallax, a parameterized Local Linear Attention that is scalable for LLMs. Parallax eliminates the numerical solver in LLA and learns an extra query-like projector that probes the KV covariance. We place Parallax within a family of attention mechanisms connected by the bandwidth, the probe construction and the affine structure. We propose a hardware-aware algorithm that increases the arithmetic intensity over FlashAttention, shifting attention into a more compute bound regime. Our prototype decode kernel matches or outperforms FlashAttention 2/3 across diverse batch sizes and context lengths. We pretrain Parallax at 0.6B and 1.7B scales and find consistent perplexity improvements throughout pretraining with gains that transfer to downstream benchmarks. The advantage persists under both parameter-matched and compute-matched controls, demonstrating a Pareto improvement. We perform careful pretraining ablations and identify a novel phenomenon whereby Muon unlocks the capacity of Parallax. To our knowledge, this is the first empirical demonstration of strong architecture-optimizer codesign for attention mechanisms in the architecture research literature.

TokenPacker: Efficient Visual Projector for Multimodal LLM

The visual projector serves as an essential bridge between the visual encoder and the Large Language Model (LLM) in a Multimodal LLM (MLLM). Typically, MLLMs adopt a simple MLP to preserve all visual contexts via one-to-one transformation. However, the visual tokens are redundant and can be considerably increased when dealing with high-resolution images, impairing the efficiency of MLLMs significantly. Some recent works have introduced resampler or abstractor to reduce the number of resulting visual tokens. Unfortunately, they fail to capture finer details and undermine the visual reasoning capabilities of MLLMs. In this work, we propose a novel visual projector, which adopts a coarse-to-fine scheme to inject the enriched characteristics to generate the condensed visual tokens. In specific, we first interpolate the visual features as a low-resolution point query, providing the overall visual representation as the foundation. Then, we introduce a region-to-point injection module that utilizes high-resolution, multi-level region-based cues as fine-grained reference keys and values, allowing them to be fully absorbed within the corresponding local context region. This step effectively updates the coarse point query, transforming it into an enriched one for the subsequent LLM reasoning. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our approach compresses the visual tokens by 75%~89%, while achieves comparable or even better performance across diverse benchmarks with significantly higher efficiency. LiT: Delving into a Simplified Linear Diffusion Transformer for Image Generation

In commonly used sub-quadratic complexity modules, linear attention benefits from simplicity and high parallelism, making it promising for image synthesis tasks. However, the architectural design and learning strategy for linear attention remain underexplored in this field. In this paper, we offer a suite of ready-to-use solutions for efficient linear diffusion Transformers. Our core contributions include: (1) Simplified Linear Attention using few heads, observing the free-lunch effect of performance without latency increase. (2) Weight inheritance from a fully pre-trained diffusion Transformer: initializing linear Transformer using pre-trained diffusion Transformer and loading all parameters except for those related to linear attention. (3) Hybrid knowledge distillation objective: using a pre-trained diffusion Transformer to help the training of the student linear Transformer, supervising not only the predicted noise but also the variance of the reverse diffusion process. These guidelines lead to our proposed Linear Diffusion Transformer (LiT), an efficient text-to-image Transformer that can be deployed offline on a laptop. Experiments show that in class-conditional 256*256 and 512*512 ImageNet benchmark LiT achieves highly competitive FID while reducing training steps by 80% and 77% compared to DiT. LiT also rivals methods based on Mamba or Gated Linear Attention. Besides, for text-to-image generation, LiT allows for the rapid synthesis of up to 1K resolution photorealistic images. Aligned Multi-View Scripts for Universal Chart-to-Code Generation

Chart-to-code generation converts a chart image into an executable plotting script, enabling faithful reproduction and editable visualizations. Existing methods are largely Python-centric, limiting practical use and overlooking a critical source of supervision: the same chart can be expressed by semantically equivalent scripts in different plotting languages. To fill this gap, we introduce Chart2NCode, a dataset of 176K charts paired with aligned scripts in Python, R, and LaTeX that render visually equivalent outputs, constructed via a metadata-to-template pipeline with rendering verification and human quality checks. Building on a LLaVA-style architecture, we further propose CharLuMA, a parameter-efficient adaptation module that augments the multimodal projector with a language-conditioned mixture of low-rank subspaces, allowing the model to share core chart understanding while specializing code generation to the target language through lightweight routing. Extensive experiments show consistent gains in executability and visual fidelity across all languages, outperforming strong open-source baselines and remaining competitive with proprietary systems. Further analyses reveal that balanced multi-language supervision benefits all languages and that the adapter allocates a compact shared core plus language-specific capacity. DirectL: Efficient Radiance Fields Rendering for 3D Light Field Displays

Autostereoscopic display, despite decades of development, has not achieved extensive application, primarily due to the daunting challenge of 3D content creation for non-specialists. The emergence of Radiance Field as an innovative 3D representation has markedly revolutionized the domains of 3D reconstruction and generation. This technology greatly simplifies 3D content creation for common users, broadening the applicability of Light Field Displays (LFDs). However, the combination of these two fields remains largely unexplored. The standard paradigm to create optimal content for parallax-based light field displays demands rendering at least 45 slightly shifted views preferably at high resolution per frame, a substantial hurdle for real-time rendering. We introduce DirectL, a novel rendering paradigm for Radiance Fields on 3D displays. We thoroughly analyze the interweaved mapping of spatial rays to screen subpixels, precisely determine the light rays entering the human eye, and propose subpixel repurposing to significantly reduce the pixel count required for rendering. Tailored for the two predominant radiance fields--Neural Radiance Fields (NeRFs) and 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS), we propose corresponding optimized rendering pipelines that directly render the light field images instead of multi-view images. Extensive experiments across various displays and user study demonstrate that DirectL accelerates rendering by up to 40 times compared to the standard paradigm without sacrificing visual quality. Its rendering process-only modification allows seamless integration into subsequent radiance field tasks. Finally, we integrate DirectL into diverse applications, showcasing the stunning visual experiences and the synergy between LFDs and Radiance Fields, which unveils tremendous potential for commercialization applications. direct-l.github.io{Project Homepage
